Ashley and Paul’s Groomals
Posted on April 23, 2010
What’s a Groomal you ask? It’s kind of like a bridal portrait, but throw in a groom for good measure. Groomal.
Ashley and Paul are simply one of my favorite couples ever. They booked me for their wedding over a year out, and ever since we took their engagements waaaay back in 2008, I knew they were going to be a blast to work with. Their wedding at Holy Rosary/Hotel Derek last November was killer, and when we finally got around to taking their groomals (after getting rained out 3 times) a few weeks ago, they did not disappoint. Anyway, here are some of my favorite images from the session. Please leave a comment if you like what you see!
We started off at Hotel Derek. (Thank you Stacy for hooking us up!)

This one is going on the first page of their wedding album. Cuz’ they’re cool like that.

Then we took advantage of the gorgeous weather and finished up at Uptown Park.

Love love love this last one (bottom right)! Paul says it makes them look cooler than they actually are. I said maybe you guys just are that cool!

Thank you Ashley and Paul for being such awesome clients!

Megan and Travis’ Engagements – Downtown Houston
Posted on December 16, 2009
Megan and Travis are a really cool couple, and they happened to go to school with my wife and I! They were a couple years behind us, but both had brothers my age. I’m definitely looking forward to shooting their wedding and seeing some old peoples from high school. Anyway, we took their engagement photos in downtown Houston, and despite Megan feeling a little under the weather, these two took some amazing portraits! Below are some of my faves. Please leave some love for Megan and Travis if you think they look hot, or for me if you think the shots are pretty decent.

Love those eyes!

Some people are photogenic kissers. Some are not. Megan and Travis had it down!

I love this one! They’re expressions are so sweet. And I know, I am thoroughly addicted to sun flare. I’ve admitted this several times.

Here’s a little squirel’s-eye-view for ya.

My favorite

Thanks for a great shoot, Megan and Travis!

Snow!
Posted on December 4, 2009
If you live in Houston, then you definitely know about all the snow hullabaloo this afternoon. Our town gets so excited if a little snow falls out of the sky, and we’re simply beside ourselves if it actually sticks to the ground.
Having grown up in Chicago I’m no stranger to snow, but Kacie has rarely experienced it. I’m very excited that Caden got to see some his first winter (although I know he won’t remember it). At least we got some pictures.
You may or may not know that we started a family blog that Kacie is maintaining. It is over at TheNyholts.com. If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out! She posts lots of pictures and stories, mainly about Caden. Below are a couple pictures from today, but there are more to see over at the family blog, so check it out!
Merry Christmas, and enjoy this freezing cold weather! Come next July you’ll be begging for it!

Jenny and Steve’s Wedding – Alden Hotel – Houston, TX
Posted on December 3, 2009
Jenny and Steve had their wedding and reception at the fabulous Alden Hotel in Downtown Houston. Mandy Millen with Every Little Detail Events did an amazing job knocking out the details and making sure everything went smoothly. Dream Bouquet provided the gorgeous flowers, Rockn Robin made sure the party kept going until the very end!
These two were definitely one of those couples that you just know are going to be a blast to work with. From the very first meeting I had a great feeling about them, and I was right. The wedding was a little modern yet elegant, relaxed yet vivacious. It was definitely a wedding I’d borrow ideas from if I were doing it all over again! Anyway, here are a few (ok, a LOT) of my favorite shots from the day. Get that scrolling finger warmed up!

Starting things off in the Bridal suite at the hotel.

Meanwhile the guys were getting all purtied up as well.

The guys all wore custom suits made for the wedding. How cool is that?!?!

Definitely my favorite from the getting ready series!

Mandy doing her thing. Tying that perfect bow.

Jenny and Steve had a “First look” before the wedding. Steve waits….

It was such a great moment. I highly recommend doing this!

Since they saw each other before the wedding, we were able to get some sweet portraits while there was still daylight.

Favorite ceremony shot!

A little cocktail hour in the lobby to keep everyone entertained while they flipped the room…

RAWWRRRRR!

Like I said- modern and elegant.

I love this little moment captured.

I want those glasses. Too bad I don’t wear glasses.

And let the dancing begin!

Love that look!

After the big exit, we snuck away for a few intimate night shots.

Thanks for an amazing time, guys!

Jud Johnson Band at the House of Blues
Posted on August 28, 2009
My brother in law, Jud, is a very talented musician and has an incredibly good band, the Jud Johnson Band. Their style is very Jam Band, kind of Dave Matthew-esque, and they have some really good stuff. Check out their site! http://www.judjohnsonband.com.
Anyway, when I found out they were playing again at the House of Blues I asked Jud if I could shoot their set, just for fun. There are always a lot of photographers wanting to shoot for them, so I was pleased when he agreed to have me come along!
Nigel on Guitar

Enter Jud.

Scott Cole, an old friend, on Bass.

Zach on the Sax.

Ben is also an old friend, and an incredible drummer.

Thanks for looking! Don’t forget to leave a comment and check out Jud’s Music.

Katie’s Bridals
Posted on March 3, 2009
I shot Katie’s bridal portraits at Rice University, and we got some great stuff! The weather was great, the light was gorgeous, Katie looked stunning…. it was all perfect. Years ago, when I first shot at Rice, I didn’t really enjoy it because all I had seen were the simple and kind-of-boring “classic” Rice shots. However, since I’ve been shooting there I’ve challenged myself to create fresh and unique images as well as capture a few of the classic poses for my clients. Katie’s shoot was no exception! I can’t wait for John to see her portraits. Thanks for a great shoot, Katie!
Enjoy, and please, leave me some comment lovin!
I know these next two are similar, but I love them both!

Kimberly’s Bridals
Posted on March 1, 2009
We shot Kimberly’s fantabulous bridals at the always beautiful Paraiso Maravilla. Definitely one of my favorite spots. Kim looked great and was very relaxed and totally ready for the shoot. She took some great portraits! Check some of them out:
My favorite!
So Kim tells me she wants to get a few outside. As we’re out there, beneath the foliage, we’re hearing birds chirping. Kim says,
“Watch, a bird is going to crap on me.” 20 seconds later, a bird craps on her! I really did not know what to expect, but Kim was totally cool. Actually she thought it was hilarious! This shot I grabbed as her mom is wiping the bird crap off her dress with some toilet paper! Kim couldn’t stop laughing about it, which made the next couple (inside) poses really fun and natural. Nothing like a little bird excrement to lighten up a shoot!
Thanks Kim for a great session!

Jocelyn’s Bridals
Posted on February 9, 2009
Here are a few picks from Jocelyn’s great bridal session downtown. She was so much fun to work with, and we got some great shots! I also have to give her mad props for her choice of prints. I take a lot of different types of poses on a shoot– some a little more traditional for mom, and some, well, not so traditional. 90% of the time the bride and/or MOB (mother of the bride) pick one of the more traditional poses to display at the wedding. Not Jocelyn! She had 4 prints made, and they were all shots I would have picked myself! Some of them are in this post! A word of advice to brides: pick the photos that you first fall in love with, not those that you think other people will like. You’ll be much happier, and your guests will love them as well!
So gorgeous!
My favorite!
My second favorite!
Some of the people in line just didn’t get it…
Thanks for a great shoot, Jocelyn!
