New Print Ad

Posted on September 6, 2010

“I don’t do a lot of advertising, but when I do, I prefer Weddings in Houston Magazine.” (Spoken like the most interesting man in the world.)

Ok, that was corny. But it’s true. I only have one print ad, and it’s in the best local wedding magazine, Weddings in Houston. If you are planning a wedding you should go get one. Right now. Or come by my studio and I’ll give you one for free, if you just listen to a 30 minute presentation about buying a timeshare. Ok ok, no time-share pitch. Jut a free magazine. No catch. :)

Anyway…… my last ad layout served me well, but now it’s time for a new look, so here it is. Many thanks to Lauren and Will for being my new cover-couple. Here is the full page ad that will appear in the next issue of Weddings in Houston.

Christmas Card

Posted on December 9, 2009

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share with you this custom Christmas card I made for my clients, Sarah, Michael, and Dean. I made the whole thing from scratch. Proud of me? :)

Here’s the design. Outside and inside.

And here is the actual printed piece. We used a heavy stock with a subtle pearlescence that shimmers slightly at certain angles. It looks really great!

I’ll be offering custom cards for any occasion to all my clients! Christmas, wedding thank-you’s, birth announcements, you name it! Email me for pricing. Take care!

Announcing Children and Family Portraiture!

Posted on April 2, 2009

If you didn’t catch that my last announcement was an April Fools joke, because you didn’t click the link to my “portfolio”, now you know :) I was definitely joking. This is a real announcement though!

I am SUPER excited to announce that I am now branching out into children and family portraiture! Many of my wedding clients are starting families and they’ve been asking me to take their children and family portraits. Just like they wanted with their wedding photography, they want portraiture that is unique and personal, so I’m here to deliver! My favorite was when Deidra asked me after her wedding, “Adam, will you do baby pictures? Don’t tell me I’m cut off!”

Another exciting announcement is that Kacie will be joining me in this new venture! She has knack for working with children and a creative eye that will allow her to create some amazing images! As always, our approach to creating images for our clients will be personal and relational, with an emphasis on capturing your family’s personality through the lens. I must note, however, than we’re not limiting ourselves to kids and families. We’ll also be shooting seniors, musicians, and anyone else who wants a great portrait made.

For a limited time we’ll be offering a great special. **$100 off your session fee, and 10% off your first print order!** Email or call me to receive specific pricing information and to learn more about the unique approach we have to portraiture! To my clients, thank you all for your support of my business, and for allowing me to be a part of your lives. I look forward to creating many more amazing images with you. And to my future clients, CALL ME! I can’t wait to meet you! :)

It’s rant time

Posted on October 13, 2008

I’ve ranted before about the ridiculous rules that churches impose on photographers during wedding ceremonies. Most notably how many Methodist churches, such as St. Paul’s in the museum district, confine the photographer to the balcony and won’t allow us into the sanctuary at any point. However, this past weekend I found a church that takes the cake. When I first read and signed the photography rules agreement for Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Houston, I have to admit I was very confused by them. The language was very unclear, and the terms used to describe areas of the church confused me even after looking them up on wikipedia. My best interpretation was that flash was not allowed at all, and I could only shoot from the very back of the church. The rules for the videographer were similar.

Well when I got to the church, and spoke with the coordinator, I found out that I’m not allowed to take ANY pictures inside the church during the ceremony… PERIOD. The only exception was I could take a picture of the kiss, from the very back of the church (which was almost pointless because of how far back into the altar area they were, and because of the large candle that was placed directly in front of them). To repeat, I get to the church and find out that I am not allowed to take a single picture during the ceremony. Not even a shot of the processional. Nothing. Also, despite the coordinator’s insistence, the bride was not aware of this. When I spoke to her I found out that the church has their own videographer who tapes the wedding, and the bride and groom must purchase the video from the church. They cannot bring their own videographer in to record the wedding. The coordinator claimed that this is because it is a religious ceremony and is not to be disturbed, but I put it on the same level as sports stadiums and theme parks that won’t let you bring in outside food or beverages because they want to force you to buy their overpriced goods. I could maybe understand that photography, even without the flash, might be a distraction because of the “clicking” sound, but there is absolutely no reason why a videographer could not put a completely silent video camera on top of a tripod and just let it record. Again, this is total BS. The worst part is that is not what the rules say.

From the agreement I signed:
“One or two time exposures (not requiring a flash) from a tripod in the rear aisle of the Cathedral may be taken during the service as long as there is no distraction”
Ummm…. that’s not what they said when I got there.

“After the procession, the videographer may station the camera underneath the War Memorial at the rear of the nave.”
Ummm…. again, not what happened.

Way to go Christ Church Cathedral.

Just about any church will restrict the use of flash from the moment the bride reaches the altar to the moment the couple leaves the altar. This I can deal with. A lot of churches will not allow me to go past the last row of guests. That I can deal with as well. I understand that a wedding ceremony is of religious and spiritual significance, and is very special to the bride and groom. That is why the churches set rules, and that is why I follow them. I always try to minimize my presence while shooting a wedding, and my goal is to never be a distraction. Even when some churches give me total free reign, I treat that freedom respectfully and get the best images I can while not being a distraction. This is what the bride and groom pay me (a lot) to do. Capture incredible images of real emotions and moments during their wedding. Not in fake re-creations afterwards.

I think a lot of the administrators of these churches are totally out of touch with the kind of photography people want these days. It’s not about stuffy posed portraits in big stuffy albums. It’s about capturing real moments and real emotions as they happen, and some people just don’t get that.

The moral of the story here is KNOW THE CHURCH’S RULES BEFORE YOU BOOK IT. I understand that photography is not that important to everyone, so to them this might not be a big deal. However, to my clients photography is a big deal, and chances are since you’re reading my blog, it is to you too.

Finally, since nobody likes a post without pictures, here’s a shot of an AMAZING 300 lb. Batman cake from the Cake Wrecks blog. Click on the picture to see the whole post and see more pictures.

My apologies….

… To my clients who haven’t seen their pictures up on my blog yet. My goal is to blog every shoot I do. Lately I have been soooo busy that I’ve decided to prioritize posting weddings. They may not be in order, but so far I’ve been getting every one up (right now I’m up to mid-May). However, there have been quite a few fantastic engagement and bridal portrait sessions that I just haven’t got up yet. If you haven’t seen yours on my blog, don’t worry! I plan on catching up eventually!

Changes are a-comin….

Posted on May 21, 2008

Hey everyone! 2008 has been a really great year so far! I’ve shot some awesome weddings, and I’m almost through the insane months of April and May (9 weddings in 7 weeks!). I’m getting tons of referrals from all of you, my awesome clients, and I really appreciate it! I just wanted to give you a quick heads up.

In the next month or so I’ll be rolling out new packages and pricing. The packages are going to be even simpler and more flexible than they are already, making it even easier for brides and grooms to get exactly what they need! However, as a result of these changes, the package prices will increase. If you have friends who are looking into wedding photography, and planning on meeting with me, you may want to encourage them to meet me sooner rather than later!

I’m really stoked about the rest of 2008 and all the great clients I’ve booked for 2009 already! On that note, my Winter/Spring 2009 is almost full, so if you have friends who are planning for that time of the year, tell them to get on it!

Finally, I’ll also gradually be rolling out a bunch of new high quality products this summer. Including new types of parent albums, engagement/bridal albums, custom guest books, and luxurious La-vie wedding albums. These products will be available to past, present, and future clients. Just let me know if you’re interested!

That is all. :-)

New and improved!!!

Posted on February 27, 2008

The new blog is here!!! Post a comment and tell me what you think. This is version 1.0, but so far I’m liking it. Version 1.5 is going to have an improved navigation (drop down menus near the top of the page, instead of at the bottom), and a comments section that is easier on the eyes. I haven’t posted in a while, but I’ve been shooting a lot so very soon you’ll start to see some more stuff up here.

Oh yeah, please let me know if you find anything that is broken :-)

update: I’ve already started working on the comments section. Look for changes in the next couple days.

Edit: Here’s a shout-out to Chris Figat who helped me hack my way through CSS to get this looking the way I wanted :-)

New Dynamo stadium around the corner… and across the street from me.

Posted on January 9, 2008

In a press conference today, Mayor White announced the signing of a letter of intent by the city to purchase a 6-block parcel of land southeast of minute maid park for the Dynamo’s new soccer stadium. This isn’t a done deal yet, but is very close.

The coolest thing is that the complex will be directly next to my house. And, depending on the type of stadium and where it is exactly, I may even be able to look into it from my fourth story balcony. Sweet!Dynamo Stadium
