Christy and Kyle’s Wedding – Crested Butte, Colorado

Posted on July 28, 2010

Many of you know Kyle. He’s been working with me for the better part of a year, helping out with studio management and making the slideshow magic happen at weddings. Well on June 19th his own wedding rolled around and I had the honor of shooting it! Christy and Kyle are a very fun couple, with very funny and quirky personalities! When they told me about their destination wedding in a tiny Colorado town, and the ceremony on top of a mountain, I was super excited! Without further ado, here are some of my faves from the day. Please leave a COMMENT for Kyle and Christy if you like their photos!

Behold, the town of Crested Butte.

Kyle and Christy were married at almost 10,000 feet. How cool is that?

After their wedding we spent a couple hours in the harsh afternoon sun taking some portraits. We were hot, dusty, and sweaty, but it was worth it!

LOVE the shot on the left.

Oh, and this one on the left too. Personal fave!

Did I mention they were quirky? The cemetery shoot was by request. :) I’m telling them to order this as a giant gallery wrap.

Off to the reception!

Don’t forget to watch the slideshow if you want to see more!

Thanks for inviting me to be a part of your gorgeous wedding, Christy and Kyle!

Lauren and Wyatt’s Engagements – Buenos Aires, Argentina

Posted on July 1, 2010

This is a post I’ve been VERY excited to put up! Lauren and Wyatt were kind enough to invite me and Kacie along to Argentina, specifically the city of Buenos Aires, where we took their engagement portraits. It was an amazing experience! We had so much fun hanging out with Lauren and Wyatt for a couple days, and they looked so great in their portraits!

*** If you don’t want to hear me jabber on about the details of our trip, scroll down to see the photos***

Buenos Aires is a city of 11 million people in an area of 50 square kilometers. It was packed! Kacie and I spent the better part of 2 days running around the city like crazy and location scouting. We were able to narrow it down to three parts of town, but I could have spent a month taking pictures there. The culture there was quite something. It was very laid back, yet formal. The service at restaurants was pretty bad. Polite, but inattentive. The upside was nobody expects much of a tip. Speaking of restaurants, the food there was amazing. Kacie and I ate at one of the nicest steakhouses in the country, equivalent of a 5 star restaurant in the states, and we spent less than $150. And the steaks were amazing. European style cafes were on every street corner, and everywhere we went the espresso was great. My kind of town!

Another thing we noticed was people drive CRAZY. The lane markers were literally just for decoration, and there are very, very few stop signs or traffic lights. Imagine 11 million people driving like crazy without traffic lights at many of the intersections. Amazingly, we saw very few cars that were beat up and we didn’t see a wreck the entire time we were there. It was like there was some subliminal form of communication that kept all the drivers from hitting each other.

We spent some time shopping and both bought leather jackets (the Argentine are known for their leather goods), and even got to see a traditional tango show, which was pretty impressive. All-in-all I’d say it’s definitely a place I’d go back again, but next time I hope I can go for more than 4 days!

With out further ado, here are some of my favorites (with narration):

————————————-

After enjoying dinner with Lauren and Wyatt another nice steak house (Argentina is famous for its beef), we took some night shots in an area of town called Puerto Madero. It’s an upscale and hip part of town, popular with tourists, students, and young, well-off professionals in Buenos Aires. That spikey-looking thing is a very cool pedestrian bridge.

This was a ramp down to a floating dock. We only lasted a minute before getting kicked off by their equivalent of the coast guard.

Before calling it a night, we grabbed a shot on the widest (non-highway) street in the world. Avenue de Julio is 18 lanes across, with multiple lights guiding pedestrians who want to cross. It typically takes 3 light changes to make it across.

After a short night’s sleep, we got our butts out of bed early, grabbed some breakfast in the hotel, and then took a 40 minute cab ride to an empty park on the South Atlantic Ocean. It was all worth it, however, for these sunrise shots.

I couldn’t decide if I liked the shot above or the shot below better, so I put them both up. It’s my blog, so I can do that. :P

I really love the soft morning light in this image.

This shot gives you an idea of some of the architecture in BA. It is heavily European, specifically with a lot of french inspiration. The balconies on these buildings are slightly more modern, but in other parts of the city you’d swear you stepped right into Paris.

I really love this image of Lauren and Wyatt. Their expressions are perfect, and the cobblestone is a perfect backdrop.

One of my favorites areas of town is called Recoletta. In Recoletta is a famous cemetery with thousands and thousands of above-ground tombs, most of which extend several stories below ground. They are filled with caskets and urns representing centuries of a family’s history. It was an amazing sight. Well aware of the incongruity of taking wedding photos in a cemetery, we shot here for over an hour and got some great stuff. :) One of my favorite images below.

Also in Recoletta are these enormous (and I mean enormous) gum trees. The picture on the right doesn’t do the tree justice. It was easily as wide as it was tall, and my 14mm lens at 30 feet back couldn’t come close to taking it all in. If you look closely, you’ll see Lauren and Wyatt. :)

Finally, to finish up our day and a half of shooting, (after a little siesta) we ended up in a famous area called La Boca. It is a very touristy area, but is very poor, and can be dangerous at night. It’s famous for it’s brightly colored buildings and heritage as one of the original tango neighborhoods. Frankly, it was a photographer’s paradise. By this time Lauren and Wyatt were pros and got some amazing shots!

Mimicking a tango here on the right :)

The image on the right is 100% natural. It is NOT photoshopped. :)

And last but not least, we had to do something that made us look like stupid tourists!

Everybody give Lauren and Wyatt a hand for surviving a grueling 24 hours of shooting, and for looking good the whole time! And please LEAVE A COMMENT if you like what you see!
